Raw comics are where the real treasure hunting happens — but also where collectors get burned. Here's how to not be that guy.
1. Know the CGC Grading Scale Before You Buy Raw Comics
- Understand the CGC grading scale even if the book is raw
- Make sure your version of "Very Fine" and "Near Mint" matches the seller's
- What to look for: spine stress, color breaking, staple rust, water damage, centerfold detachment
- "If you can't grade it yourself, you're guessing"
2. Check Sold Listings, Not Ask Prices
- eBay sold comps are the real market — not what someone wants
- GPA (GoCollect, MyComicShop) for graded comps to back-calculate raw value
- Rule of thumb: Raw typically trades at 60–75% of its CGC equivalent. Raw book enthusiasts will often pay close to CGC comp, as raws are more valuable to them than slabs.

3. Understand What Drives Value in a Raw Comic
- Key issue? First appearance? Newsstand vs. direct? Low print run?
- A "cheap" copy of a non-key is still a bad deal if there's no demand
4. Factor in the Hidden Costs of Buying Raw
- Pressing + grading fees if you plan to submit (~$50–$150+ per book)
- Bags, boards, storage — small but real
- Shipping damage risk on raw books
5. Red Flags to Walk Away From
- Vague condition descriptions ("good shape," "nice copy")
- No photos of the back cover, spine, or staples
- Prices way off in either direction of eBay sold prices or grading comps
6. When Buying a Raw Comic IS the Right Move
- Books you love and want to read or display
- Affordable entry into a key issue when the CGC price is unreasonable
- Speculation plays where pressing could unlock value
